Paternoster Winery, founded in 1925, is a prestigious estate located in Barile, Basilicata, on the slopes of Mount Vulture, an extinct volcano that enriches the soil with minerals ideal for viticulture. The winery is renowned for its production of Aglianico wine Don Anselmo, a bold, age-worthy red often called the “Barolo of the South.” Its flagship wine, Don Anselmo, crafted from old vines, exemplifies the depth and elegance of the region’s volcanic terroir.
Paternoster blends tradition with innovation in its winemaking. Grapes are organically farmed, hand-harvested and carefully sorted to ensure quality. Fermentation typically occurs in stainless steel tanks to preserve purity of fruit, followed by aging in a mix of large Slavonian oak casks and French barriques, depending on the wine’s style. This approach balances structure with finesse, allowing the wines to express both power and nuance.
We have also imported the Synthesi, a vibrant and approachable Aglianico, and Vulcanico, a crisp Falanghina white that showcases the minerality of the volcanic soil. Paternoster continues to thrive under the third generation, with oenologist Fabio Mecca at the helm. The estate’s 20 hectares of organically farmed vineyards produce wines celebrated across Italy and beyond.
Under the thoughtful guidance of Fabio Mecca, the third generation continues the family’s legacy wines that balance power and elegance, shaped by place, patience, and time.
