Kamara Pure Winemaker, Dimitrios Kitsoukis first contacted us earlier this year with a passionate desire to “finally have his wines in Australia!”. Without knowing what to expect, we were blown away by the structure, amazing fruit, clean crisp minerality and quality of these natural Greek wines.
Prior to the early 1900’s, Dimitrios’ family made wine for hundreds of years in East Rumelia on the Black Sea before immigrating to Greece. After many years working as a chemical engineer, Dimitrios was finally financially able to set up and plant his vines in 2010, thus carrying on his forefather’s tradition of winemaking.
In 2015, Stavroula, Dimitrios’s daughter, brought to the winery her skills and studies as an agronomist and oenologist, converting all production to natural methods. This family led winery also includes her mother, brothers and sisters who also all work together.
Nearly all indigenous grapes were planted including Assyrtiko, Malagousia, Roditis, Muscat, Moschofilero, Xinomavro and Limnio along with some French varietals. In the hilltops of Mygdonia region of Northern Greece, near Thessaloniki there are 11 hectares which are managed organically using bio-dynamic and permaculture methods.
Due to phylloxera, wine had not been made there since 1898. Clay, sand, schist and many different small to large stones provide the nourishing base for the vines.
All farming is done manually with use of nettle and yarrow herb sprays, compost and manure and to combat the harsh summers vines are woven into crown or basket shapes shading the grapes and water management. The success of these methods is evident in the amazing biodiversity found in the vineyard.
These delicious minimal intervention wines are all made using indigenous yeasts for fermentation, no chemicals are added, unfiltered, unfined and zero sulfur at bottling.
