Varietals and key wines include; ‘Nobile’, ‘Chianti’, Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Trebbiano, Malvasia, Vermentino
Situated in the historic district of Vino Nobile, in the southeast of the Siena province of Tuscany, this organic winery is pushing the boundaries of sustainable winemaking practices.
Led by Michele Manelli since 1997, Salcheto focusses on terroir and sangiovese oriented wines offering drinkability and aromatic accuracy and marrying history, innovation, and quality.
Salcheto is the name of the stream, which springs at the foot of the town of Montepulciano and forms the boundary of the organic and biodynamic estate. The estate owners continue to replant willow trees at the winery to contribute to the winery’s energy independence, and willows feature prominently on Salcheto’s logo as part of its commitment to environmental sustainability.
All winemaking is sulphite free and uses indigenous yeasts. Its ‘off-grid’ cellar is touted as a model of environmental efficiency and technological innovation. Salcheto uses an integrated environmental estate management model (GHG, Water, Biodiversity). It has also achieved world first by indexing its carbon and water footprint. The bottle for the ‘Bordolese Toscanella’is dubbed the lightest and most ecological bottle available on the market.
The winery also certified the carbon footprint of a bottle of wine (according to ISO 14064 standard) and drinkers can calculate the CO2 footprint of wines from the vineyard to the location where the bottle is uncorked.
